Driving License

(1) International Driving Permit

1. The international driver's license must be the booklet style of license
as shown in the illustration below (card-type licenses are not acceptable).
2. The front cover must specify the 1949 Geneva Convention on Road Traffic.

*Japanese law does not recognise international driving permits that are
obtained in accordance with the 1926 Paris Convention on Motor Traffic,
the 1943 Washington Convention, or the 1968 Vienna Convention.
*In order to drive a Hiace Wagon (W4), your permit must be stamped in
the D box next to the photograph.
*International Driving permits are valid for one year from the date of
issue.

(2) Foreign Driving Licenses (Switzerland, Germany, France, Austria, Belgium, Italy, and Taiwan)

Holders of the above-mentioned driving licenses can use their licenses both domestically and abroad.
However, a Japanese translation of the license must be presented along with the original license in order for it to be accepted.

An official translation of the licence can be obtained at the national embassy or consulate in Japan, or from JAF
(Japan Automobile Federation).

*Your driving license must satisfy either (1) or (2) above to be able to rent a car and drive in Japan.

Parking Prohibitions

The following signs and markings show areas where parking and/or stopping are prohibited.

If you find a parking sticker attached to your rental car:
(1) Report to the Police Station
Report to the police station shown on the parking ticket.
The police will take you through the necessary paperwork, and you will be
required to pay a fine.

(2) When returning the car, show the documents and fine receipt that you received from the police.

*Japan has zero tolerance for drinking and driving. Never drive after
drinking even the smallest amount of alcohol.

Entering an Expressway (Toll Road)

1. When you are near the entrance to an expressway, you will see green signposts similar to the one shown below.
Follow the signs to the tollgate.



2. When you approach the tollgate, head for a gate signposted as General as shown below to pay by cash or credit card.



Take a ticket from the machine before passing through.
*Do not go through the purple-signposted ETC gate. This is only for cars equipped with electronic toll collection systems.



3. Once you have taken your ticket, proceed onto the expressway.




Exiting the Expressway (Toll Road)

1. When you are approaching your exit,
follow the signposts (as below) to the exit ramp.



2. As you approach the tollgate, head for the lane marked as General as shown below.



Give your ticket to the staff member in the booth, and pay the required toll.
The amount required is also shown on a digital display in front of the car.
*Do not go through the purple-signposted ETC gate.
This is only for cars equipped with electronic toll collection systems.


After receiving your receipt etc, proceed out through the gates and onto the standard highways.



Renting a Car Through TOYOTA Rentacar

(1) Make a Reservation
Fill out the information required in the booking form, and send it to us.

(2) Collect the car.
1. Visit the office specified in your reservation documents.
2. Inform the counter staff that you have a reservation.
3. Complete the contract. Check that the time, date, and return office information is correct.
Pay the amount requested by credit card.
4. Check the car for scratches or dents along with the staff member.
5. Set your destination into the Sat Nav system (we can help you if you are not sure how to use it).
6. Enjoy your trip!
*There is no collection counter inside the airport. After visiting the Toyota Rentacar Desk, our staff member will drive you to the collection office.

(3) Return the car
1. Fill the petrol tank at a nearby petrol station, or pay for the petrol at the Toyota Rentacar Office.
2. Check the car for dents and scratches with the staff member.
3. If you have extended the rental period, pay the required additional fees by credit card.
*Please contact the rentacar office if you think you will be delayed.
*If the car is damaged, you will be required to pay additional charges when you deliver the vehicle.
*You cannot return the car at the airport terminal. Please return the car to the rentacar office.
One of the staff members will drive you to the terminal to catch your flight.

Insurance & Options

Insurance


All cars are covered by insurance. If an accident occurs, insurance benefits will be paid by the Toyota Rentacar insurance
policy. There is no deductible (deductible costs are included in the car rental price).

Extras

Sat Nav. System
All hire cars are equipped with navigations systems at no extra charge.
However, availability of English navigation is limited by quantity and by type of car.

Fuel

The car will be supplied with a full tank of fuel. Please refill the tank when you return the car.
The car will use either regular (unleaded) or diesel, please confirm the type of fuel at the collection office.


Options

Child Car Seat
Japanese law requires that children under six years old be secured in child car seats.
Baby car seats must be used for children under nine months old (height less than 75cm, weight less than 10kg).
Both types of child seat are available to rent at the additional charge of 500 yen per 3 days.
Ski Rack
Ski racks are available during the winter period. Racks can carry up to 6 pairs of skis or 4 snowboards
(actual capacity may be less depending on the size).

One Way Charge

Toyota Rentacar has 65 branches throughout Hokkaido, and you can arrange to return the car at any of these branches.
However, if you wish to return your car to a Rentacar office that is different to the one where you collected it,
you will be required to pay a one way charge based on the distance between the offices.
For more information, please inquire about one way charges.

Requirements

Driving License
Either a valid Japanese driving license or International Driving Permit obtained in accordance with the 1949 Geneva Convention are required. If you are using an International Driving Permit, please present your passport along with your permit.
Licenses issued in Switzerland, Germany, France, Austria, Belgium, Italy and Taiwan are also accepted when accompanied with an official translation and passport.

Payment
Please bring your current driving license, International Driving Permit, passport, and credit card with you when renting a car.
You will be asked to prepay the estimated cost of the rental by credit card when you collect the car.
Most major credit cards are accepted.

Non Operation Charge
In the case of an accident, you will be charged an additional 20,000 yen or 50,000 yen as business compensation for the car not being in rentable condition during the repair period.

Reservation Changes
Please contact us if you would like to make changes to your reservation, or if your flights are changed.
Unless you inform us in advance, your reservation will be automatically cancelled if you do not visit the office before closing time on the planned departure day.

Cancellation Policy
Cancellation fees are charged under the standard cancellation policy, as detailed below.
7 days before collection: No charge

3-6 days before collection: 20% of the estimated total
1-2 days before collection: 30% of the estimated total
Date of departure or later: 50% of the estimated total
