Poplar

Hokkaido style, tree lines

Poplar is a deciduous broad-leaved tree in the willow family, originally from Europe. It has a unique shape similar to a standing broom and grows more than 20m high. The poplar is an icon of Hokkaido, and at Hokkaido University the poplars grow in straight lines and are a well-known and popular spot for tourists. Theses poplar trees growing in lines can also be seen at Hakko Gakuen in Tsukisamu, Sapporo City, and at the Trappist Monastery in Hakodate City.
