The little pale yellow flowers bloom from late May and produce bluish purple fruits around July. The Ainu valued this fruit highly as it was believed to assist in perpetual youth and long life, and this is why the fruit is called the ’Phantom Fruit.’ The fruit contains anthocyanidin and iron which slow the signs of aging and improves vision. The fruit produced is processed and used for foods such as sweets and jams and is rising in popularity.
