This plant is a variety of yamatsutsuji and grows throughout Japan. In Hokkaido this plant is called ‘aka-tsutsuji (red tsutsuji)’ while Ezo-murasakitsutsuji is called ‘murasaki-tsutsuji (purple tsutsuji.)’ 600,000 Ezo-yamatsutsuji bloom from late May to early June at the Esan Tsutsuji Azalea Kouen Park which is located at the foot of Mt Esan, a live volcano 40km to the north of Hakodate City area.
