The Otaru Canal was completed in 1923. Its south side was reconstructed in conjunction with the opening of the Otaru Rinko Sen state route in 1986 and became a relaxing spot where locals and tourists enjoy taking strolls. At night, the gas lamps and illuminated warehouses create a retro and romantic atmosphere. The north side of the canal near Temiya remains as it was years ago, having a tranquil and sentimental feel.
