A beautiful slope that shows how frequently Hakodate has suffered from major fires in the past
This is one of the beautiful slopes found in Hakodate’s Motomachi district. As the name indicates, the slope is 20 (niju) ken (approximately 36 meters) wide. This was a result of expanding the road to add firebreaks as a measure against major fires that the city used to have frequently. Along the slope, there stand the Higashi Honganji Temple’s Hakodate Betsuin and Gotoken Honten, a long-established Western-style restaurant. People also called the slope "Daikumachi Zaka" because there used to be carpenters (daiku) and craftsmen living nearby. It’s fun to stroll down the slope, measuring its width by your stride length.
