The secret of "Garinko 2" the ice drifting tour boat
Cruise the open ocean covered by ice on this ice drifter. It is a rare experience only available at the Sea of Okhotsk in Japan. "Garinko 2", operated by Mombetsu city is an iconic experience. As the name suggests, the boat has a special drill (screw) that crushes ice.
The Garinko was first developed in the 1970s as a vehicle to travel on ice. Then it made its debut in 1987 as the first ice drifting tour boat in Japan.
The improved Garinko 2 was completed in 1997. With the help of "Archimede's screw", which is slightly wider in the front, the boat is able to move backwards as well so there is no need to worry about getting stuck on the ice during the ice drifting tour.
On the docks you will find 2 illustrations by Shigeru Yamai, the captain of Garinko 2 who was also part of the developing team. Try and find them. Experience "Ice drifting and Garinko", official heritage of Hokkaido on the cold Sea of Okhotsk.
