Jewels of ice scattered over the beach
A sparkle like infinite jewels scattered on the beach. This is the Otsu beach at the mouth of Tokachi river in Toyokoro-cho. This seemingly never-ending beautiful sparkle filling the beach is ice. Picture ©Satoru.Kiyoshige
Lumps of ice created in Tokachi river float into the Pacific Ocean, which then get carried to the shore when the waves are rough and end up covering the beach.
This fantastical phenomenon, which can only be seen during the coldest time of winter from January to the end of February, has been named "Jewelry Ice"by a local photographer, and has come to receive much attention over the recent years. It is a popular spot on "Tokachi Scenic Byway Tokapuchi Yudai Kukan."
